MATCH OF THE MONTH | DARLIN & NOEMI

April 13, 2020

Each month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Wisconsin shines a light on the relationships that we are helping build within our community. Please help us congratulate in Darlin Morton and her Little, Noemi — our Brown County Match of the Month for April.

Why did you want to become involved?
Darlin – “I have a lot of youthful energy and a bit of wisdom.  To share this with someone who is eager to learn, have fun and grow with has been my motivation.”

What do you do when you spend time together?
Noemi – “We always find a way to get crafty or comfortable.  There was one time we painted rocks and left them so others could find them.  Sometimes we have the best laughs just making pizza and watching a movie.”

Darlin – “We both enjoy simple things.  Movies, cooking, playing cards.  Yet getting out in nature together has been wonderful.  Hiking, camping, waterfalls, swimming in the bay, snorkeling.”

Is there something in particular that stands out as a memorable time with your Little/Big?
Noemi – “Definitely our camping trip.  We saw lots of waterfalls, did some hiking and swam in a lake.  It was also my first time spending a night in a tent.  Another time we volunteered together at a half marathon when it was super chilly so we drank lots of hot cider.”

Darlin – “Cliff jumping in Door County!!  I’m also truly impressed that she is willing to get dirty with me doing random garbage roadside pickups.”

Is there something in the future that you would like to do together?
Both replied – Take a road trip!!  Maybe to Chicago museums, or the caves in Tennessee.

What have you learned from your Big Sister?
Noemi – “There are so many things.  I learned to fish, to remember landmarks on a map, to save money in a piggy back she bought me.  Also that I am safe inside a roller coaster that’s flipping us like crazy, even when I feel like I’m going to fly out.”

What have you enjoyed about being a Big?
Darlin – “Noemi is such a hoot!  She is very family oriented and yet curious about the world.  I believe this intelligent gal has an incredible future ahead and can become anything she desires. She has brightened my life.  She reminds me it’s ok to just take the time in the world to simply be goofy.”

How has being matched with your Big Sister made a difference to you?
Noemi – “We have been matched for a long time.  So she has been there for me over the years.  She has watched me grow up into the young woman I am today.”

Noemi is graduating in June and will be attending college in the fall.
