Joy Hurley & Hannah

Hi, everyone! My name is Joy, and this is my Little Sister Hannah. I first heard about Big Brothers Big Sisters program on WDOR radio Sturgeon Bay about 8 years ago and knew I wanted to get involved because I wanted to give back to the community. Time and experiences with Hannah was exactly what I needed!

Hannah and my time together has changed throughout the years. When we were first matched, we did more activities and playing together. Our time together looks different as the years have progressed. Despite her hectic work schedule and my health issues, we still find time to connect and have fun together. Hannah and I have lots of fond memories together. One of my favorite things about our friendship has been all of the fun, new games she has taught me. Looking back, we were very funny and felt like two fish out of water, but we got through those times. Our relationship is now second nature to us. Another favorite memory was going to the Door County Fair and playing on the bumper cars together.

I am eagerly anticipating watching Hannah accomplish her goals in life. I have high hopes that Hannah will follow her dream of helping people through opportunities such as public defense or elderly care. She is a highly compassionate young lady, and I will support her wherever her path takes her.

Being a “Big” is one of the most rewarding things that I’ve ever done. Spending time with Hannah makes me feel fulfilled and like I can give a little guidance when she wants it. I still remember when I was her age. If only I had someone to mentor me, maybe I wouldn’t have made some of the mistakes that I did when I was a teenager. I’ve been given a gift of her friendship with Hannah, and I feel very blessed because of it.

To anyone considering being matched, I say go for it! I did, and it makes me a better person.
